Crops for Processing (CfP) – FAQ

1. Who can apply for the CfP Standard?

Any primary producer of crops, where the crops that are grown in a controlled production process are further processed and not consumed fresh. Examples include

  • fruit and vegetables that are canned, cooked, frozen, and/or juiced; and
  • combinable crops used for human food or for feed.
  • (Green) Coffee.
2. Is processing covered under CfP?

No, processing is excluded from CfP. However, the link from the producer to the processor shall always be very clear, e.g., via a contract that clearly indicates who is responsible for which part of production/processing. Information regarding the processor shall be included in the “ Overview of Farming Operations” in the CfP checklist. Any links to the processor’s certification shall be made available.

3. Choosing between IFA and CfP?

Producers can determine the standard that applies to them by using the decision tree in the CfP checklist (see tab “ Overview of Farming Operations”).

4. What are the main differences between the CfP and IFA standards?

5. What are examples of a “kill step” that shall be implemented by the processor?

Examples include residue testing, pasteurization, heating/cooking, freezing, roasting, water analysis, etc.

6. If the processor does not apply any “kill step”, can CfP standard still be implemented?

If there is no specific “kill step” applied by the processor, the CfP standard cannot be implemented at producer level. However, there may be some exceptions : In some cases, it is important to evaluate the specific crop, the process, and the history and vulnerability of this crop to food safety outbreaks. An example might be cold-press production of olive oil.

7. Can a producer register a part of his crop (e.g., peas) under the IFA standard and a part under the CfP standard?

No, the producer cannot register one crop (e.g., peas) under both the CfP and IFA standards. If a part of the crop is consumed fresh, it would require IFA certification for production. In this case, the whole pea crop shall be certified under the IFA standard, which covers more risks and is appropriate for fresh produce.

However, a producer may register one crop (e.g., peas) under the IFA standard and another crop (e.g., tomatoes) under the CfP standard.

8. Will producers that are registered for/certified against the CfP standard also get a GGN?

Yes, the producer will be issued a GGN, but with the addition “CFP”, to ensure that it is clear in the GLOBALG.A.P. database that the GGN applies to the CfP standard. An example of such a GGN might be GGN CFP1234567891011.

9. Is GLOBALG.A.P. Chain of Custody certification applicable to products originating from a CfP certified process?

No, GLOBALG.A.P. Chain of Custody is not applicable for CfP. It is only applicable for products originating from production processes certified against IFA or a fully benchmarked certification scheme.

10. Can the processor use the GGN CFP on the final processed product?

No, the GGN CFP can be used only by the holder of a valid CfP certificate (i.e., by a producer). The CoC standard can be applied only for products originating from production processes certified against IFA or a fully benchmarked certification scheme.

11. Do any additional fees apply to the certification body to be able to conduct CfP inspections?

If a certification body is already finally approved by GLOBALG.A.P. to conduct inspections/audits against the IFA Fruit and Vegetables sub-scope and simultaneously at least provisionally approved for the IFA Combinable Crops sub-scope, the evaluation fee (€300) and scope extension fee (€500) apply.

12. Where can I find the control points and compliance criteria (CPCCs) for the CfP standard?

For the CfP standard, there is only a checklist that is available for free at the GLOBALG.A.P. document center on the website. There is no additional CPCCs document for the CfP standard. The other applicable document is the “Crops for Processing General Rules”.

13. What requirements shall a certification body fulfill in order to conduct CfP inspections?
  • The certification body shall be finally approved (step 6) for the GLOBALG.A.P. IFA Fruit and Vegetables sub-scope and simultaneously at least provisionally approved (step 5) for the IFA Combinable Crops sub-scope. It is not necessary to submit an application form, but please send a formal letter of intent to
  • Inspectors shall comply with the same requirements as IFA inspectors/auditors for the IFA Crops Base scope (see GLOBALG.A.P. general regulations part III Annexes II.1 and III.2).
  • All inspectors shall have passed the online trainings for the IFA sub-scopes Fruit and Vegetables and Combinable Crops.
  • The in-house trainer needs to attend the CfP in-house trainer training.
14. Can producer groups also be certified under the CfP standard?

Option 2 certification is allowed under the CfP standard. The same rules are followed as for IFA certification.

15. Which fees apply for producers that want to register for the CfP standard?

Please refer to the latest version of the GLOBALG.A.P. fee table section 2.5 to find out about any applicable fees.

16. As a producer, what steps should I take to get started with the CfP standard?

6 Steps to Get Started with the CfP Standard 

  1. Download the relevant CfP standard documents and checklists from the quicklinks section of the GLOBALG.A.P. website.
  2. Work through the decision tree to determine whether your production processes qualify for certification under the CfP standard.
  3. Compare offers from the certification bodies in your country, register with the one you choose, and get your CfP Number (GGN CFP). Find a full list of GLOBALG.A.P. approved certification bodies here.
  4. Carry out a self-assessment using the checklist and correct all the points you do not yet comply with. Remember to complete the “Overview of Farming Operations” as well.   5. Arrange an appointment with your chosen GLOBALG.A.P. approved certification body. An inspector will conduct the first on-site inspection.
  6. Once you successfully comply with the standard’s requirements, you will receive a GLOBALG.A.P. certificate.
